Job Summary
The Paint & Prep Artist is responsible for preparing visual effects plates for compositing by removing unwanted elements, creating clean plates, reconstructing backgrounds, and ensuring shots are ready for further compositing work. This role demands a strong eye for detail, excellent technical skills, and a solid understanding of the visual effects pipeline.
Key Responsibilities
Perform paint and roto-prep tasks, including removing markers, wires, rigs, reflections, and other unwanted elements from live-action plates.
Create clean plates and reconstruct backgrounds seamlessly using various techniques (clone paint, patching, projections, and frame-by-frame painting).
Execute rig removal, beauty clean-up, and object removal efficiently while maintaining image consistency and quality.
Collaborate with Compositors, Roto, and Matchmove teams to ensure accurate plate preparation.
Track and manage assigned shots, maintaining version control and meeting production deadlines.
Ensure all prepped plates meet the technical and creative requirements set by supervisors and leads.
Troubleshoot and optimize paint/prep workflows to enhance efficiency.
Skills & Qualifications
Proficiency in Nuke, Silhouette, and Mocha Pro (experience in Photoshop or other paint tools is a plus).
Strong understanding of roto, tracking, and compositing fundamentals.
Ability to handle plate reconstruction, grain management, and color matching.
Keen eye for detail and a strong sense of visual continuity.
Ability to work collaboratively within a team and adapt to feedback.
Strong problem-solving and time-management skills.
Experience
Entry-Level to Mid-Level: 1–4 years of experience in a VFX studio environment (for Junior/Mid Paint Prep Artists).
Senior-Level: 5+ years of experience with proven expertise across complex sequences and feature film or OTT projects.
