Code for America is looking for a talented Staff DevOps Engineer who will play a critical role in transforming compliance from a constraint into an operational strength. Through hands-on execution across cloud infrastructure, CI/CD, and monitoring, you ensure that security, availability, and data integrity are built into the platform by default. This work allows civic programs to scale responsibly while maintaining public trust.
About the role:
We’re seeking an experienced Staff DevOps Engineer to help design, automate, and scale secure, compliant cloud infrastructure supporting containerized and AI-powered applications. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced, compliance-driven environments (SOC 2, HIPAA, or similar), and is passionate about Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC), CI/CD, and enabling developer velocity through automation and best practices.
This role will report to the Senior Director of Product Engineering and is expected to travel no more than 5% of the time.
Code for America is based in California and can employ those who reside full-time within the United States. This is a remote position.
In this position you will:
Technical Focus
Develop and optimize CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions for secure, automated deployments
Implement, maintain, and monitor containerized applications (Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, or EKS)
Automate cloud resource provisioning, scaling, and governance with reusable modules and policy-as-code
Manage and monitor infrastructure for performance, reliability, and cost optimization
Contribute to and enforce secure DevOps best practices (least privilege, secrets management, audit logging, vulnerability scanning)
Support platform integration for AI/ML workloads, container orchestration, and environment isolation
Mentorship & Ongoing Learning
Actively seeks and applies emerging practices in cloud infrastructure, security, and AI/ML tooling; adapts approaches in response to shifts in compliance requirements, platform needs, or organizational priorities
Mentors peers on DevOps best practices and contributes to team-wide standards
Collaborate closely with engineering and security teams to ensure compliance with frameworks such as SOC 2, HIPAA, and NIST 800-53
Other duties as assigned
About you:
This position is a perfect fit for someone who stays current in a fast-moving field — bringing lessons from new tools, frameworks, or past experience to bear on today's problems, and adjusting course when the landscape shifts.
7+ years of relevant software engineering experience
3–5+ years of hands-on DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure engineering experience
Experience building and maintainingInfrastructure as Code (IaC) modules to provision and manage cloud-based deployments
Deep experience with AWS (CloudFormation, IAM, ECS/EKS, Lambda, CloudWatch, S3, VPC, RDS)
Strong communication, documentation, and collaboration skills in matrixed organizations
Familiarity with Azure or Google Cloud Platform (GCP) a plus
Proficient in GitHub Actions, Docker, and Kubernetes
Experience working in regulated or compliance-heavy environments (SOC 2, HIPAA, FedRAMP, NIST)
It’s a bonus if you have:
Ability to set up automated security testing for applications
Experience securely integrating PAAS systems with first-party environments
Experience with LLM application development, including agentic workflows and LLM orchestration
Scripting in Ruby, Python, Bash, or Go for automation and tool development

Salary:
Code for America’s salary bands are transparent as a part of our commitment to transparency and fairness. As part of our hiring practices, we aim to target the midpoint of the 2nd quartile of the range for all new hires.
Offer targets vary based on market / geographic location. The offer targets for this role range from $128,945 to $157,850, annually. Your Recruiter will discuss compensation in more detail & answer any related questions, during the initial Recruiter phone screen.

Retirement & 401k Plans:
Employees receive a 100% employer match on the first 3% of contributions.
Employees with 3+ years of service receive an additional 50% match on contributions between 3% and 5%, for a maximum employer contribution of 5%
Medical:
At least one no cost health insurance option for full-time employees for employee-only coverage
A minimum of 80% of the cost of dependent coverage
Remote Work:
Code for America employees may work remotely across the US
Code for America employees main residence must be within the US
Full-time employees work 40 hours per week, Monday - Friday
Collaborative working hours: we aim to hold all internal meetings between 10 AM - 3 PM PT. We expect all Code for America staff to be available during these set working hours
Time Off:
Open personal time off (subject to manager approval), a minimum of 14 paid holidays, and an org-wide closure from Christmas Day through New Year's Day
Paid sick time; up to 96 hours annually
17 weeks of paid parental and family leave
3 weeks of paid sabbatical after 5 years of service
