Peter Lang is an international publishing group specialising in Humanities and Social Sciences. We publish about 1,000+ books every year in German, English, and French, as well as in multiple other languages, from traditional print products to eBooks and Open Access publications.
Back in 1970, the Swiss entrepreneur and philanthropist Peter Lang founded his academic publishing company in his own name. In over fifty years since then, the company has undergone growth and change and overcome many challenges as an independent, internationally focused business. We are now a dynamic, entrepreneurial group of colleagues working across the globe to deliver excellence in academic publishing.
You will experience an international work environment with lean management. The Peter Lang headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, are the central hub for management and administration. The rest of our team is based in continental Europe, Anglo-American regions, and Asia with offices in Berlin, New York, Oxford, Brussels, Chennai and supporting locations in Vienna, Warsaw, Istanbul and Madrid.
We are seeking an AI Software Developer to support the development of PublishingNexus, our core operating platform for a modern publishing company. This role will contribute to the delivery of practical tools, workflows, and integrations that support our digital transformation across the Peter Lang Group.
You will report to the CTO and work closely with the Data Manager, as well as colleagues across the business, to understand operational needs and help turn them into reliable, well-structured software solutions. We use AI-assisted development as part of our everyday software delivery, so coding experience in a particular language is not essential; more important is a willingness to learn, think clearly, understand technical concepts, and apply them carefully in context.
Key Responsibilities:
Contribute to the development of PublishingNexus as a core operating platform for the business.
Work with the CTO, Data Manager, and business teams to understand requirements, processes, and practical operational problems.
Help translate business workflows into clear system designs, data structures, user interfaces, and integration requirements.
Support the delivery of core functionality as part of Peter Lang’s digital transformation programme.
Use AI-assisted development tools to help build, test, review, and document software features under guidance from the CTO.
Assist with the design and improvement of APIs, data flows, background jobs, queues, scheduled tasks, and system integrations.
Help ensure that features are reliable, understandable, well documented, and suitable for colleagues across departments to use.
Support testing, troubleshooting, and validation of system behaviour, including data quality and workflow outcomes.
Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders, asking good questions and documenting decisions where needed.
Develop a strong understanding of the publishing processes, data, and systems that PublishingNexus brings together.
Required Qualifications & Skills:
Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to understand how systems, workflows, and data fit together.
A clear interest in software development, system design, and the practical use of AI-assisted coding tools.
Understanding of, or willingness to learn, core technical concepts such as APIs, databases, authentication, permissions, background processing, logging, testing, and integrations.
Attention to detail and a careful approach to checking that software behaviour matches business requirements.
Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain technical ideas clearly to non-technical colleagues.
Willingness to have a go, learn quickly, and work through unfamiliar problems with support from senior colleagues.
Ability to work remotely and collaborate effectively with colleagues across different teams and locations.
Desired Qualifications & Skills:
Experience, academic study, or strong personal interest in system design, business process improvement, data workflows, or software delivery.
Previous exposure to any software development, database, automation, or low-code/no-code environment is helpful but not required.
Experience of improving a process, designing a tool, documenting a workflow, or helping others adopt a new system.
Interest in publishing, digital transformation, operational systems, or data-driven business processes.
